"Why are you going
to AltaRoma?! Rome is dead!"
This is what I was told
each time I announced my arrival in Rome for the couture week (alta
moda).
I confess that at first I
had some doubts in doing so. The cost of trains, taxi and
accommodation were such a deterrent to me because I can't boast the
title of "specialist correspondent" for a famous magazine
(with expensive benefits and refunds), but the passion for what I
think will be my future work field, the curiosity for the
celebrations of the 10th anniversary of Who is On Next? contest and
the joyful opportunity to see the fashion shows of the fashion
designers I have supported over the years until they become
established brands, fortunately prevailed, and I've never been so
happy (and satisfied) to attend a fashion week.
"Ma che ci vai a
fare ad AltaRoma?! Roma è morta!"
Questo è ciò che mi
sono sentito dire ogni volta che nelle settimane antecedenti la
manifestazione annunciavo il mio arrivo nella capitale.
Lo ammetto, anche io
all'inizio avevo qualche perplessità sul da farsi: il costo del
viaggio, degli spostamenti e dell'alloggio erano un gran deterrente
visto che non mi posso fregiare del titolo di "inviato speciale"
di qualche testata (leggi = disponibilità rimborso spese a fondo
perso), ma la passione per quello che ritengo sarà il mio campo di
lavoro futuro, la curiosità nei confronti delle celebrazioni per il
decimo anniversario del concorso Who Is On Next? e la possibilità di
assistere alle sfilate di quegli stilisti che ho sostenuto negli anni
fino a vederli diventare delle realtà affermate, fortunatamente
hanno prevalso, e non sono mai stato così contento di aver seguito
una fashion week.
So as Pitti Immagine in
Florence, even AltaRoma in Rome can be considered a parallel universe
if you compare it to the international fashion weeks. In Milan,
London, Paris and New York the fashion show timetables follow a so
fast pace in which the delay may not exceed the 30 minutes, otherwise
journalists get away or write negative reviews (Despite the purchase
of advertising space on magazines and newspapers, the human factor
has still a large weight in the reviews of the fashion shows); in
Rome instead, everything is more quiet because the shows are held in
the same place, so it is easier to follow them without getting stuck
in the traffic.
Now that I've experienced first hand how it performs the whole thing, I can say that AltaRoma is unique and I think it mainly depends on three factors:
Come Firenze con Pitti
Immagine, anche Roma può essere considerata un universo a sé
rispetto ai circuiti del fashion system internazionale: se infatti a
Milano, Londra, Parigi e New York le tabelle orarie delle sfilate
procedono con ritmi serrati in cui i ritardi non possono superare i
30 minuti, pena la fuga dei giornalisti e le conseguenti recensioni
negative (sì, nonostante le marchette e l'acquisto di spazi
pubblicitari/editoriali, il fattore umano ed emozionale ha ancora un
gran peso nelle recensioni delle sfilate); a Roma invece, è tutto
più tranquillo e poiché le sfilate si tengono nello stesso luogo, è
anche più facile seguirle senza rimanere imbottigliati in chissà
quale parte della città.
Ora che ho vissuto in
prima persona come si svolge il tutto, posso dire che AltaRoma è
davvero unica e credo che dipenda principalmente da tre fattori:
1 - MIX OF STYLES
The varied range of
collections and designers I think is the key for the success of this
couture week.
Alongside the
high-sounding names of the historic Roman haute couture tradition
such as Raffaella Curiel and Renato Balestra, there are new couturier
generations as Sabrina Persechino or Giada Curti who make a total
different work from the old masters.
Speaking of which, I
would like to tell something about the aforementioned "old
school". I had the opportunity to touch a cloak studded with
applications by Raffaella Curiel in the backstage just after the
fashion show and as I watched the seams construction and the sparkle
of the crystals I thought that many people should rinse their mouths
with acid before criticize an historical brand like this just because
it doesn't follow the contemporary market diktat (for foreigners
readers, you have to know that in Italy the Roman alta moda is
considered out of fashion). Is it so difficult to understand that
these handcrafted masterpieces are exclusively made for a select
trustworthy clientele who doesn't have any interest in contemporary
fashion trends? In Rome there is no need of contemporary fashion
research, neither of red carpet looks, but only the desire of wearing
a dress made according to the traditional tailoring and the finest
craftsmanship technique. Nostalgic? Too old style? Maybe so; but it
is a type of fashion characterized by the unmatched quality of
details, and having the opportunity to attend the most celebratory
and self-referential moment for the brand, such as the fashion show,
is one of the most fascinating things that can happen to you at
AltaRoma!
Those who aren't
interested in couture, may attend several ready-to-wear fashion shows
of designers often coming from the Vogue Who is on Next? contest, or
even African designers thanks to the ITC Ethical Fashion project
which point the spotlight on selected brands that employ entire
communities valuing local fabrics and workmanship. Finally, the last
day is devoted to the collections of fashion students coming from the
institutes of Rome. In addition to all these institutional events,
there are many others presentations or cocktail parties scattered
throughout the city.
La variegata tipologia di collezioni e designer ritengo sia il fattore
fondamentale per il successo di questa manifestazione. Accanto agli
altisonanti nomi dei couturier della vecchia guardia come Raffaella
Curiel e Renato Balestra, di fronte ai quali si deve portare
solamente rispetto vista l'impareggiabile esecuzione di dettagli che
molti nuovi designer possono solo sognare, spuntano i nuovi couturier
come Sabrina Persechino o Giada Curti, innovatrici di quell'alta moda
romana collettivamente riconosciuta come desueta, ma che non si sa
perché continua a far da cornice ai sorrisi immortalati da Dagospia
nei saloni da ballo delle più nobili casate della capitale, quindi così morta non dovrebbe essere, no?
A tal proposito vorrei
spezzare una lancia a favore della sopracitata "vecchia
guardia": ho avuto l'occasione di toccare con mano una cappa
tempestata di applicazioni di Raffaella Curiel ed il pensiero "a
caldo" che mi è balzato alla mente mentre osservavo le cuciture
e lo scintillio dei cristalli è che molte persone si dovrebbero
sciacquare la bocca con l'acido prima di parlare male di realtà
storiche come queste solo perché non inseguono le logiche
stilistiche e di mercato contemporanee. Ci vuole tanto a capire che
queste maison realizzano capolavori artigianali solo ed
esclusivamente per una selezionata clientela fissa e fidata che non
ha il benché minimo interesse per le tendenze contemporanee? Non c'è
esigenza di ricerca, né tanto meno di look da red carpet, ma solo
del rispetto della tradizione sartoriale e dell'alto artigianato. E'
una moda nostalgica? è una moda vecchia? Va bene, ve lo concedo, ma
si tratta comunque di una moda dalla qualità senza pari e poter
godere del momento auto-celebrativo e referenziale per eccellenza,
quale la sfilata, è una delle cose più affascinanti vi che possono
capitare ad AltaRoma!
Chi non è interessato
alle varie declinazioni dell'alta moda italiana, può assistere alle
numerose sfilate di pret-a-porter dei designer spesso vincitori del
concorso di Vogue Italia Who is on Next?, o addirittura dei designer
provenienti dall'Africa grazie al progetto ITC Ethical Fashion che
punta i riflettori su selezionate realtà che danno lavoro ad intere
comunità africane valorizzando tessuti e lavorazioni locali,
ammiccando alla moda occidentale. Infine, l'ultimo giorno della
manifestazione è dedicato alle sfilate delle collezioni degli
istituti di moda che hanno sede nella capitale, ma a questi eventi
istituzionali si affiancano altrettanti appuntamenti disseminati in
tutta la città in cui vengono presentati accessori e linee di
stilisti fuori calendario o semplicemente mostre e cocktail party,
arricchendo così le occasioni di divertimento nella città eterna.

2 - LOCATION
Another factor that makes
AltaRoma a unique event, especially in the eyes of an architect, is
the suggestiveness of the locations where the events are hosted.
The AltaRoma headquarters
are in the complex of Santo Spirito in Sassia, with two large
frescoed halls hosting the fashion shows and the quiet cloister, for
which silence does not seem to be in Rome.
The other event locations
change from edition to edition and personally I visited the atelier
of Renato Balestra in an elegant building of the late nineteenth
century; the Gardens of Sallust, with the splendid pavilion of the
Roman period (!!!) that after so many centuries still dominates the
square; and finally the sumptuous Palazzo Braschi, with its very
unusual wood and ceramic floors decorated with Moorish themes.
Obviously, even in
Florence and Milan fashion shows and events take place in dreamy
location, but being inside an archeological site has no equal.
Altro fattore che
rende unica la manifestazione AltaRoma, soprattutto agli occhi di un
architetto, è la suggestività delle location in cui vengono
ospitati gli eventi.
La sede centrale è il
Complesso di Santo Spirito in Sassia, con le due grandi aule
affrescate che ospitano le sfilate ed il tranquillo chiostro, per il
cui silenzio non sembra neanche di essere a Roma.
Gli altri eventi
cambiano location di edizione in edizione e personalmente ho potuto
visitare l'atelier Renato Balestra in un elegante palazzetto di fine
ottocento; gli Horti Sallustiani, con lo splendido padiglione di
epoca romana (e sottolineo romana) che dopo tanti secoli troneggia
ancora in mezzo alla piazza; ed infine il sontuoso Palazzo Braschi,
con degli insoliti pavimenti in parquet e ceramica dai temi
decorativi moreschi che farebbero invidia ai più noti palazzi del
medio oriente.
E' ovvio che anche a
Firenze e Milano molto spesso le sfilate e gli eventi hanno luogo in
location da sogno, ma il pensiero di trovarsi all'interno di uno
scavo romano penso non abbia eguali.

3 - RELAX
An independent factor
from the organization of AltaRoma, but that contributes to the full
enjoyment of the event is the relaxing atmosphere that you can
breathe in Rome.
The times, both for the
Roman lifestyle and the summer season, are relaxed and everybody is
perpetually late, but this matter of fact doesn't assume a negative
value: it is a very common practice attending an event at least one
hour and a half after the time indicated on the invitation.
Even the accreditation
(check lists of seating assignments) that usually is the most
traumatic moment of a fashion show for a journalist, in Rome it flows
in a flash, without long queue and hysteria scenes (very common in
Milan). In order to this, given the smaller presence of press than
the other international fashion weeks, you can often find your seat
near important people like Franca Sozzani, Silvia Venturini Fendi,
Suzy Menkes, Diane Pernet, Beppe Modenese and many others.
You can object that they
are always the same people that you can see in Milan!
Yes, it's true! But at
least in Rome they aren't overwhelmed by freaks prancing to be
photographed by some streetstyle photographer.
Il fattore
indipendente dall'organizzazione di AltaRoma, ma che contribuisce
sicuramente al pieno godimento della manifestazione è il clima di
relax che vi si respira.
I tempi, vuoi per lo
stile di vita romano, vuoi anche per la stagione estiva, sono
rilassati, dilatati, dilungati e tutti sono perennemente in ritardo,
ma ciò non assume una valenza negativa, anzi è prassi comune
presenziare agli eventi almeno un'ora e mezza dopo l'orario indicato
sull'invito, per poi scomparire magicamente nel nulla appena prima
che si concluda la festa.
Anche alle sfilate il
momento solitamente più traumatico di tutti, ovvero quello
dell'accredito (assegnazione dei posti con controllo delle liste
invitati) a Roma scorre in un battibaleno, le file sono disciplinate
e ordinate (strano vero?) e non si assiste mai a scene di isteria
(cosa invece molto comune a Milano) e dato il minore afflusso di
stampa rispetto alle altre fashion week internazionali, ti ritrovi
sempre SEDUTO (altro fattore da non sottovalutare) vicino
personaggi importanti come Franca Sozzani, Silvia Venturini Fendi
(spesso con figlie al seguito), Suzy Menkes, Diane Pernet, Beppe
Modenese e molti altri.
Capirai! - obietterete
- E' sempre la stessa gente che si vede a Milano!
Sì è vero, ma almeno
a Roma non viene sopraffatta o scavalcata da fenomeni da baraccone
che scalpitano per essere fotografati da chissà quale presunto
fotografo.

Like
it or not, in Rome there is no street-style and the
Milanese-fashion-crowd knows it well, so if they attend AltaRoma,
they wear only minimal casual clothes, without flaunting some social
status through any garment-oddities.
Due
to this sense of relaxation, which inevitably bring people to not set
up crazy outfits, my friend and colleague Riccardo says that AltaRomamiss the glamour.
Honestly,
I would rather say that in Rome there is a different kind of glamour:
it is a sober elegance made of small details, in deep contrast with
the other events.
Che piaccia o no, a
Roma non c'è street-style e anche la variegata fauna
della moda lo sa benissimo, tanto che se decide di presenziare, sfila
in minimalissime mise casual, senza bisogno di ostentare alcuno
status sociale attraverso bizzarie e co. (il confronto con Pitti o la
MFW non è affatto casuale).
Proprio a causa di
questo senso di relax, che inevitabilmente porta anche ad un certo
disimpegno nella preparazione delle mise, il mio amico Riccardo sostiene che ad AltaRoma manchi il glamour, io piuttosto
direi che tra i partecipanti e gli ospiti di AltaRoma vi sia un
glamour sussurrato, educato e rispettoso, fatto di piccoli dettagli
sobri che al contrario delle altre manifestazioni non ti fa
vergognare di avere scritto sul pass d'accesso la parola Blogger a
caratteri cubitali, ma questa è tutta un'altra storia.
