Il Veneto è una delle
regioni italiane che vanta tradizioni artigianali famose in tutto il
mondo per la loro unicità e lo sa bene Bruno Parise,
visionario imprenditore con un lungo passato nel ramo della
maglieria, che sfruttando questa grande risorsa umana e territoriale
ha lanciato negli ultimi due anni una linea di borse destinata a
conquistare il mercato nazionale ed internazionale, Bruno Parise
Italia.

Tradition,
craftsmanship and innovation are the few, but essential
keywords for the success of Bruno Parise Italia. The main
feature of his bags is the recover of the antique Venetian
weaving tradition (intreccio), by salvaging a treadle loom of the
eighteenth century for weaving tapestries. Thin strips of leather are
woven with a cotton thread canvas of the same color, creating a sort
of soft fabric which Bruno Parise models and declines in timeless
shapes to meet the needs of all women.
Bruno Parise Italia is a
conscious choice of style, a brand which avoids logos and trusts in
the rare traditional craftsmanship, making each bag unique.
Following the
presentation of the collection and thanks to Alessandra Parise (who
cures the communication of the brand), I had the honor to interview
Bruno Parise investigating his relationship with the territory,
his type of customers and the love for Venetian craftsmanship.
Le parole chiave del
brand Bruno Parise Italia sono poche, ma essenziali:
tradizione, artigianalità, innovazione. Non si tratta infatti del
solito spot gratuito ed inflazionato al Made in Italy, ma della reale
valorizzazione della tradizione veneta attraverso l'antica
tecnica dell'intreccio recuperando e modificando un telaio a
pedale del Settecento per la tessitura degli arazzi.
Sottili fettucce di pelle
si intrecciano con una tela di fili di cotone del medesimo colore
creando una texture simile ad un morbido tessuto che Bruno Parise
modella e declina in forme senza tempo andando incontro alle esigenze
di tutte le donne e non solo.
Una scelta di stile
consapevole, il cui punto di forza non sta in loghi e scritte
evidenti, ma nelle rare e ricercate lavorazioni artigianali
tradizionali che rendono unica ogni borsa Bruno Parise Italia.
In seguito alla
presentazione della collezione e grazie al fondamentale aiuto di
Alessandra Parise che si occupa della Comunicazione del brand, ho
avuto l'onore di poter intervistare a distanza Bruno Parise
indagando sul suo rapporto con il territorio, la sua tipologia di
clientela e l'amore per l'artigianato.

Why did you turn to
the world of accessory after your previous successful entrepreneurial
activity in knitwear?
Once completed my former
experience in knitwear (en: Bruno Parise opened fifty flagship stores
in the Triveneto, Lombardy and Emilia Romagna in the 80s). I felt I
needed to get back into the game. I immediately understood the great
chances to export the products and know-how we have in Italy, never
exploited before. What we do had never been taken into account
because the main focus was on novelties and not on the craftsmanship
that enabled Venetian "artists" to get to such great
achievements over the centuries. With my visionary view of business,
I thought, therefore, to promote Venetian craftsmanship readapting it
to the contemporary audience. Thus, modifying tapestry weaving
frames, we have achieved highly qualified and innovative products.
Dopo la sua lunga
esperienza pregressa nel campo della maglieria e dell'imprenditoria
cosa l'ha spinta ad approdare nel mondo degli accessori?
Una volta conclusa la
mia esperienza nella maglieria (n.d.r. Bruno Parise ha aperto dagli
anni ’80, cinquanta punti vendita monomarca nell’area del
Triveneto, Lombardia ed Emilia Romagna) ho sentito la necessità di
rimettermi in gioco. Subito ho capito le potenzialità legate alla
possibilità di esportare le cose belle e le esperienze che abbiamo
già in Italia, e che non sfruttiamo. La lavorazione che realizziamo,
infatti, non è mai stata presa in considerazione perché tutti
guardavano alle cose nuove e nessuno si soffermava sui grandi
prodotti artigianali che hanno realizzato gli artisti veneti nei
secoli. Con la mia innata voglia di guardare al mondo e al business
in maniera del tutto visionaria, ho pensato dunque di promuovere
l’artigianalità veneta riadattandola per il pubblico dei giorni
nostri. Così, apportando alcune modifiche a dei telai che
intessevano arazzi, ecco che abbiamo ottenuto un prodotto altamente
qualificato ed al contempo innovativo.

Weaving is part
of the Venetian tradition and leather goods well-known brands have
patented their own models and techniques. What makes Bruno Parise
Italia's interweaving unique? Does it have a particular name? Which
are its main features?
It is a hand-loom with
nowadays technological innovations that have made it much faster. It
can build up a web of leather narrow strips with endless combinations
enabling you to realize ideas that could once only be imagined. With
this basis it is possible to put into practice ideas that could only
be imagined. We can also boast another particular type of weaving,
entirely handmade. It derives from the ancient technique using
"festugo"( cob leaves) in hat making. Thanks to leather,
our craftsmen have turned into luxury a poor process.
L'intreccio fa
parte della tradizione veneta ed alcuni noti brand di pelletteria
hanno brevettato i propri modelli e tecniche. Di che tipologia è
quello che rende unico il marchio Bruno Parise Italia? Ha un nome in
particolare? Quali sono le sue caratteristiche?
Si tratta di un telaio
a mano, al quale abbiamo aggiunto alcune innovazioni tecnologiche
disponibili attualmente che l’hanno reso decisamente più veloce,
come del resto è necessario oggigiorno. Grazie ad esso si riesce a
creare un intreccio di sottili strisce di pelle che consente di
realizzare infinite combinazioni: con questa base è possibile
tradurre in realtà idee che potevano solo essere immaginate. Inoltre
possiamo vantare un’altra tipologia di intreccio realizzato
totalmente a mano, esso si rifà ad una tecnica usata anticamente per
creare cappelli con il “festugo”, ovvero con la membrana che
copre le pannocchie; i nostri artigiani hanno così elevato grazie
alla pelle una lavorazione povera e genuina.

How did you come to
think abut using an eighteenth century treadle loom and how did you
get hold of it?
A few years ago I met a
Venitian artist who was making carpets for the most beautiful shop in
Piazza San Marco. I asked her if was possible to adapt such technique
to bag making, a market I was approaching at the time.
For months we explored
the possible techniques to create products that would be suitable for
up-to-date and inimitable products.
She had already exhibited
at the MOMA in New York and at the time she was looking for new
ideas. Joining of our efforts we gave bith to the product we have
been presenting since then.
Com’è nata
l'idea di usare un telaio a pedale del Settecento, ma soprattutto
come ne è entrato in possesso? Mi racconti la sua storia.
Qualche anno fa ho
avuto modo di conoscere un’artista di Venezia che realizzava
tappeti per il più bel negozio di Piazza San Marco e le ho subito
chiesto se poteva dedicarmi un po’ del suo tempo per capire se
fosse possibile rinnovare questa tecnica per adattarla a delle borse,
un mercato nel quale mi stavo affacciando all’epoca. Per mesi
abbiamo studiato insieme le tecniche possibili per creare dei
prodotti che fossero adatti per questi tempi e che non fossero
imitabili. Dal canto suo quest’artista aveva già esposto al MOMA
di New York e in quel periodo stava cercando delle nuove idee da
interpretare con la sua arte. Dall’unione dei nostri sforzi è
derivato il prodotto che stiamo presentando nel mondo.

Made in Italy: quality
and high craftsmanship. How many working hours does the making of a
Bruno Parise Italia bag take, and how many artisans?
The process is quite time
consuming and craft, art, technique, but especially dedication are
required. It takes two days just to hang the frame with the warp, and
then comes the composition of the bag , which takes a full day as it
is entirely handmade. Naturally, as it always happens with leather,
molds are carried out at an earlier stage as well as the setting of
the bag itself. As for metallic part, a prototype built by a
blacksmith craftsman is developed in different units by specialized
laboratories.

garanzia di qualità e alta artigianalità. Quante ore di lavoro
richiede la realizzazione di una borsa Bruno Parise Italia e quanti
artigiani sono necessari?
Il processo è del
tutto artigianale e richiede tempo, arte, tecnica, ma soprattutto
dedizione. Sono necessari due giorni solo per stendere il telaio con
l’ordito, e poi viene la fase di composizione della borsa stessa
che dura almeno un giorno intero, in quanto si tratta di
un’operazione effettuata totalmente a mano. Naturalmente, come
sempre succede nella pelletteria, in una fase precedente si
realizzano gli stampi e si utilizzano tutte le tecnologie moderne
necessarie per impostare la borsa stessa. Per quanto riguarda gli
accessori, solitamente facciamo realizzare un prototipo da un fabbro
artigiano, che successivamente viene sviluppato in diverse unità da
laboratori specializzati.

How important is the
relationship with the Venetian area, its resources, its companies,
its people?
Thank you for the
question, because it allows me to talk about the potential and
craftsmanship of Veneto. I could have never got close to the bags
market and create my own unique solutions without coming in contact
with the skilled craftsmen of the area. Veneto can boast excellence
in gold, leather and tiles, and to us these are all ideas to create
new models, as well as endless possibilities of collaboration.
Quanto è
importante il rapporto con il territorio, le sue risorse, le sue
aziende, le sue persone?
Ti ringrazio per la
domanda, perché mi concede di fare una digressione sulle
potenzialità e le capacità del Veneto. Credo che mai avrei potuto
avvicinarmi al mercato delle borse e creare le soluzioni
straordinarie di cui sono in possesso senza esser prima entrato in
contatto con la bravura di questo segmento di territorio in cui
convivono più e più tipologie di artigiani. In Veneto possiamo
vantare l’eccellenza nell’oro, nella pelle, nelle piastrelle,
solo per citarne alcune; e per noi sono tutti spunti per creare nuovi
modelli, infinite possibilità di collaborazione.

Going through the
names Bruno Parise gives his bags, what strikes your eye is a great
passion for the Italian and international cinema. Who or what
inspires you when designing your creations, but above all which
customer are they thought for?
I'm glad you noticed
that. The cinema of the past is our reference for its elegance which
goes beyond time and space, that we have constantly in mind in
designing in our different lines.
The woman I turn to wants
to stand out focusing on the quality and design of the product she
wears, without following passively fashion, indeed often anticipating
the trends of the coming season. We like to think she avoids the
slight banality of the brand when it is expressed in mass-produced
and not niche items.
Scorrendo i nomi
delle borse Bruno Parise salta all'occhio una grande passione per il
cinema italiano ed internazionale. A chi o cosa si ispira quando
progetta le sue creazioni, ma soprattutto a che tipo di clientela
sono dedicate?
Mi fa piacere che
abbia notato questa peculiarità; il cinema del passato è un nostro
punto di riferimento per quanto riguarda l’eleganza che trascende
tempo e spazio, nostra costante nelle diverse linee che abbiamo
creato.
La donna a cui mi
rivolgo vuole distinguersi pur mantenendo una spiccata attenzione
alla qualità e al design del prodotto che acquista, senza sudditanza
verso la moda, anzi anticipando spesso le tendenze della stagione che
verrà. Vogliamo pensare che disdegni la banalità del marchio quando
si esprime in prodotti di massa e non di nicchia.

The focus on Asian
market has made you create unisex bags and lately this accessory has
also been common in menswear since we need to take lightweight tablet
or computers anywhere. Do you think you will develop a line
exclusively for men?
I admit that I will
always be tied to the woman and her sensibility and elegance.
However, it would be foolish not to realize the potentialities of a
male-dominated market, which can go from shoulder bags to tablet
folders. We are thinking about it, as we are thinking of expanding
our products beyond accessories.
L'attenzione alle
esigenze del mercato orientale l'ha portata a creare borse unisex ed
è un dato di fatto che ultimamente questo tipo di accessorio sia
sdoganato anche nell'abbigliamento maschile vista la necessità di
portare ovunque tablet o computer leggerissimi di ultima generazione.
Crede che in futuro potrebbe sviluppare anche una linea
esclusivamente per l'uomo?
Ammetto che sarò
sempre legato alla donna e alla sua sensibilità, alla sua eleganza.
Sicuramente tuttavia sarebbe sciocco non accorgersi delle
potenzialità di un mercato prettamente maschile, che può andare
dalle tracolle ai porta tablet. Ci stiamo pensando, come stiamo
ragionando di espandere il nostro prodotto al di fuori della cerchia
dell’accessorio inteso in senso stretto.

The greatest
satisfaction since the launch of your brand to nowadays.
Fortunately, we have had
many in a short time, which is not easy in this particular period. I
think first seeing my items in the Italian, but also Russian and
Japanese most prestigious boutiques. Soon after, however, the call
from Elle Italy asking to write about us!
La maggiore
soddisfazione ottenuta dal lancio del suo brand ad oggi.
Per fortuna ne abbiamo
avute molte e in poco tempo, cosa non facile in questo momento
storico. Credo che al primo posto metterei la soddisfazione di vedere
i miei capi nelle più prestigiose boutique non solo Italiane ma
anche Russe e Giapponesi. Subito dopo però metto la telefonata di
Elle Italia che ci chiedeva di poter scrivere di noi!

What do you hope for
the future of Bruno Parise Italia brand?
I hope that the future
continues on this path to grant us that international aknowledgement
we are achieving in countries such as Japan, Russia, Switzerland,
United Kingdom. And we surely hope to break into the U.S. market
where we are not present yet.
Cosa si auspica per
il futuro del brand Bruno Parise Italia?
In realtà mi auspico
che il futuro continui sulla strada che ha intrapreso in questi
seppur pochi anni di attività, ovvero che ci conceda quel
riconoscimento internazionale che stiamo ottenendo a piccoli passi in
Paesi come Giappone, Russia, Svizzera, Inghilterra. E sicuramente di
sfondare negli USA, mercato nel quale non siamo ancora presenti.
